  How Computers Operate

Computers do a lot of things to function properly, but the one that most people will pay the most attention to is its data storage and how fast it will run.

Data storage is done with two parts, the Hard drive and the RAM. Data is first stored on the hard drive, this is your hard final copy of your data, if its deleted from here it will be gone. After the Data is stored it can then be read and opened, but opening from the hard drive can be a bit slow, so now RAM plays it's part. RAM is your temporary memory, data is copied from the hard drive in bits and pieces and transferred to the RAM, doing this speeds up processing time for applications.

One perk of this system is that even if something happens to your computer, the hard drive will keep the hard copy of your data, though anything in the RAM would be lost as previously stated its temporary memory, a good comparison would be that the Hard drive is the long term memory, and the RAM is the short term memory.
